Some Baltimore-area parents may have been feeling déjà vu Thursday morning as their children’s schools closed yet again due to rainy, chilly temperatures and icy roads. Maryland kicked off the year with a January snowstorm that left up to 8 inches of snow in the region and forced school closures for days.

While kids — if not always their parents — may have enjoyed their days out of the classroom, they’ll be making up the lost time in the summer or online.

Here’s how this year’s snow days will alter calendars in each school district.

Anne Arundel County

Though open on Thursday, Anne Arundel County schools have already used all three of their built-in snow days, spokesperson Bob Mosier said.

If schools have to close again, the district has a few options: virtual learning, holding class on a planned holiday like Presidents Day or during spring break, or extending the school year, which is set to end on June 13. Mosier stressed that the district is reluctant to hold school on a planned vacation day because he knows doing so would disrupt some families’ travel plans. Calling students back to class on Presidents Day would require a waiver from the state, he added.

Baltimore City

City students did not join their county peers in a day off Thursday. But because the school system used two snow days in early January, the school year has already been extended by two days to June 13, city schools spokesperson Sherry Christian said.

If schools close again for inclement weather, the last day of school will be pushed to June 16, but that’s the latest kids can expect to stick it out. Any other would-be snow days will be replaced by virtual learning instead.

Baltimore County

Thursday’s school closure was the last of three inclement weather days that Baltimore County Public Schools had allotted for. While students weren’t expected to do work, that will be the last time this school year.

Weather-related school closures from here on out will result in virtual learning days, which will start two hours late but still count toward the 180 instructional days each public school must have every year.

The last day of school is June 16.

Howard County

As of Thursday, the Howard County school system has used five snow days, the most around Baltimore. While the end of school has been pushed from June 11 to June 18, that’s not set in stone and won’t be until winter is over because the possibility of more weather-related closures looms ahead.

If the closures happen “early enough in the school year and we have opportunities to make them up within our existing calendar, we would make every effort to do so,” spokesperson Emily Bahhar said. But if they happen closer to the end of the year and there’s little to no built-in opportunities to make up the days, the district will work with the state’s education department on possible waivers or a makeup plan.
