Dulaney’s Tyler Dailey felt a sense of peace when he arrived at Hereford High for the state cross country championship meet Saturday morning.

There was no intricate strategy. No personal record time he needed to meet.

Just run, baby.

And when the senior soared over the finish line late Saturday morning, Dailey had capped his fall running career in grand style, winning the Class 4A state title.

Dailey’s triumph was the start of a big showing for the area Saturday, featuring six individual titlists and five team champions.

Dailey clocked 16 minutes, 25.2 seconds, 22 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. He was the prohibitive favorite as the highest returning finisher from last year’s title meet on the Baltimore County course.

“There was a lot of depth last year in 4A, but came into the season running my pr (personal record) in the first race so I came out pretty strong,” said Dailey, who was sixth at the 4A state meet a year ago. “I love this course…I got out there and put everything that I had.”

Lions coach Emily Kachik said Dailey ran the perfect race.

“This was definitely in the forefront of our mind, training-wise,” said Kachik. “There were some good competitors out there for him today, but he didn’t have to do anything special - he didn’t have to run a crazy pr or take any crazy risks. He had to stay controlled that first mile and run his race.”

Saturday’s win capped a “triple crown” postseason for Dailey, who won the Baltimore County and 4A North Region titles. He’s aiming to do the same thing in the indoor and outdoor track seasons.

Wilde Lake’s Henry Hopper had the best individual showing among area boys, winning the 3A title with a time of 16:11.7. Ethan Aidam from Oakland Mills won the 2A crown (16:45.7) for the second straight year, edging Century’s Peyton Dill (16:47.3)

Westminster’s Hannah Toth claimed the girls’ 3A individual crown with an area-best 19:08. It was a “Sister Act” in the 2A girls as Hereford’s Estelle Snider placed first (19:29.0) and sister Sylvia was runner-up (19:42.7).

Severna Park continued its run of dominance on the team ledger. The Anne Arundel County school swept the girls and boys titles.

The Falcon boys received Top 10 finishes from Chris Nunn (fourth; 17:06.1) and Taylor Jarvis (sixth; 17:13.9) to compile 102 points. Dulaney was fifth (214).

Severna Park netted 100 points on the girls side. Cameron Glebocki finished ninth (20:07.5) for the Falcons, who claimed their first crown since 2018.

Severna Park bested two Montgomery County squads, Walter Johnson and Wootton.

“I told the girls they got to show up and do their job,” said Falcons coach Josh Alcombright. “Wooton is a great team, they’ve been the best team all year long. We caught them on a bad day today.”

“We were really young last year,” said Glebocki. “This year, we focused on being mentally tough.”

Struggling with injuries entering the postseason stretch, Severna Park answered the bell Saturday for a record fifth straight crown, and eighth over the last 10 seasons.

“This was definitely the toughest out of the last five years,” said Falcons coach Josh Alcombright. “This is a testament to the programs and the runners who came before them. They just dug down and knew how to win.”

Towson swept the 3A titles. The General girls (81 points) edged past Frederick (86) to claim their first title since 2008. Cecilia Van Lierop (sixth; 20:42.2) was the top finisher for the Baltimore County school.

The boys placed first in the state meet since 1987 (won Class A). Kieran Mischke (16:17.7) was runner-up to Hopper.

Local runners claimed nine of the top 10 finishers in the 3A boys race. Led by the Snider sisters, Hereford won its second straight 2A girls crown and ninth since 2010.
