Adley Rutschman was scratched from the Orioles lineup Friday with low back tightness.
He was slated to lead off and catch Corbin Burnes against the Red Sox, but James McCann took his place behind home plate, with Colton Cowser leading off.
Rutschman was hitting in the batting cages less than an hour before the game when his back started bothering him. The Orioles do not know the severity of the tightness.
“He’s day to day right now,” manager Brandon Hyde said after the Orioles lost 12-10 to the Red Sox. “I’m hoping — we’ll see.”

Rutschman was the designated hitter Thursday, going 0-for-4 in the Orioles’ 5-1 win. He’s been scuffling for two months, hitting .190 with two home runs since the start of July, his OPS only .577.
Rutschman, who debuted in 2022, has never had a stint on the major league injured list. If he requires time off, the Orioles could turn to Blake Hunt, whom they acquired from the Mariners in May. Hunt is on the 40-man roster but has not made his major league debut.
