Cade Povich will start for the Orioles on Saturday against the Red Sox, manager Brandon Hyde announced, allowing the Orioles to push back their other pitchers.

Albert Suárez was scheduled to start Saturday, with Trevor Rogers following on Sunday, but they will each have an additional day of rest. The Orioles, who have been beleaguered by injuries, are hoping the extra time off will help maintain the healthy pitchers they have left.

The Orioles will need to make a corresponding move to activate Povich on their 26-man roster.

“We like to give these guys as much of a break as possible,” Hyde said. “We’ll see what happens. We feel like, especially Al, he threw more than he’s ever thrown before last start. We are getting into a spot in the schedule where a lot of guys are getting up there in innings that are not used to it. Anytime we can give a guy an extra day or two, we are going to.”

This does not mean the Orioles are going to a six-man rotation, as they did last year at this time, but Hyde is not ruling out doing that in the future.

This will be Povich’s third stint in the majors this season after he debuted in June. He’s pitched to a 6.27 ERA in eight starts, giving up three earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in his last major league start July 29. Povich has struggled with command — the 24-year-old averaged about three walks per game, including five in each of his last two major league outings.

He’s made two starts in Triple-A since then, pitching seven innings both times.

Suárez, a minor league signing who has been an unexpected success this season, has bounced between the bullpen and the rotation. Rogers, acquired for Kyle Stowers and Connor Norby at the trade deadline, has gotten off to a rocky start with the Orioles, pitching to a 7.53 ERA in three starts.

The news comes as the Orioles grapple with pitching injuries. Kyle Bradish, Tyler Wells and John Means are out for the rest of the season, while Grayson Rodriguez is on the injured list with right lat/teres discomfort.

Chayce McDermott, the Orioles’ No. 7 prospect who also debuted this season, has a scapula stress reaction in his right shoulder, and relievers Danny Coulombe and Jacob Webb are also unavailable.
