When the Ravens took the field for the final practice ahead of their Week 5 game against the Houston Texans, two-time MVP quarterback Lamar Jackson was not present and was ruled out for Sunday.
Jackson came out of the Ravensโ loss to the Kansas City Chiefs at the end of the third quarter. He remained on the bench, sidelined by a hamstring strain.
It was not apparent on which play Jackson was injured. Coach John Harbaugh declined to say when Jackson suffered the injury but said it might have been something that built up.
With Jackson out, backup quarterback Cooper Rush will step in. Rush was 9-5 in his last four years with the Dallas Cowboys, but the Ravens are 4-10 since 2019 when playing without Jackson.
Rush had an inconsistent training camp and preseason, throwing multiple interceptions. He is also not a running threat, as Jackson is, nor does he have the improvisational ability, both central elements to Baltimoreโs offense.
Rush and the Ravens will have an even greater challenge because Jacksonโs is far from the only injury.
There are 15 names on the injury report, including players returning from previous injuries, guys who were hurt in the last game and others who were hurt during practice throughout the week.
Five players besides Jackson were ruled out Friday, while four remain questionable for Sunday. Five are expected to play.
Rookie offensive tackle Emery Jones Jr. returned from offseason shoulder surgery that placed him on the non-football injury list to start the season. He had been a limited participant to open his 21-day practice window but was upgraded to a full participant Friday. The third-round draft pick was still ruled out for the Texans game.
Defensive lineman Travis Jones (knee) was injured in Week 3 and was a limited participant Wednesday and Thursday. Outside linebacker Kyle Van Noy (hamstring) was injured in Week 2 and improved to a full participant Thursday. Both are expected to play after being full participants Friday.
Left tackle Ronnie Stanley was injured in Week 3 but played in Week 4 before having to sit out again with an ankle injury. He returned as a limited participant Thursday. After another limited practice Friday, he is questionable for the game.
Cornerback Nate Wiggins injured his elbow and wide receiver Devontez Walker hurt his oblique in Week 4. They returned as a limited participants Thursday and were on the field Friday. Although both were full participants, Walker is questionable while Wiggins is expected to play.
Three players suffered injuries during practice. Center Tyler Linderbaum hurt his calf Wednesday but was a full participant the next two days and is expected to play. Safety Kyle Hamilton hurt his groin Wednesday and did not practice Thursday or Friday. Outside linebacker Odafe Oweh hurt his eye on Thursday and did not practice Friday. Hamilton and Oweh are questionable against Houston.
Harbaugh said Hamiltonโs groin injury isnโt new and that it surfaced in the game. He then tweaked it during practice.
Cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie (hamstring) and Marlon Humphrey (calf), along with fullback Patrick Ricard (calf) and inside linebacker Roquan Smith (hamstring) did not practice Friday. All have been ruled out for Week 5.
With Smith out, the Ravens need to select a different defensive player to wear the green dot, which is given to the player who relays coordinator Zach Orrโs calls to the rest of the defense.
Orr said theyโre allowed to have multiple players wearing it during practice so they have different options.
Rookie linebacker Teddye Buchanan wore the green dot in training camp and in preseason games.
โWeโll see on Sunday,โ Buchanan said when asked if he knows if heโll be wearing it. โIโve had experience wearing the green dot in practice, so Iโll be ready.โ
Rookie safety Malaki Starks said there have been discussions about him wearing it (Hamilton wore it after Smith left the game last week), but he hasnโt practiced with it. Orr said theyโll go with someone whoโs been practicing with it.
The Texans ruled out defensive end Denico Autry (knee), defensive tackle Folorunso Fatukasi (shoulder) and safety Jaylen Reed (knee). Tight end Harrison Bryant, wide receiver Nico Collins and cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. are expected to play.
